We took Will on a tour of our neighborhood so he could see that Tokyo is not all highrises and mixed use developments
Due to the density very few homes have a "yard" so a very unique container garden style has emerged that utilizes just about every inch of property between a house and the street. It is very interesting and varies from very simple to very intricate gardens.
Better than an alarm. Just make the door 12 inches wide and about 4 feet tall. No one can get in, and NOTHING can be brought back out. 
Small yard or large yard? Depends on where you come from.

A few beers and some yakitori after walking for about 4 hours. 
It all looks like a lot of fun. So many interesting new things to experience. And oh the food! wish I could hop on the next airplane.
